Zaire Lodge

Overview:

Our aim for this week of service of and action was to cook and deliver food to families in need. Each of the three families we delivered to were already in need of assistance. Since the introduction of COVID-19 many businesses have been shut down in order to prevent the disease from spreading. Because of this, many people have not been working for over a month now. This means that they can’t make any money, although they still need to provide for their families. This is their current dilemma which Somersfield and this program are trying to solve.

What I learned about myself:

After the two days I participated in the cooking and delivering of food, I learned a few things about myself. Number one is that I’m ungrateful. After going to these communities and seeing them struggling to afford meals for their whole families it made me see how fortunate I was. I realized that I never take the time to recognize how privileged I am. Often I complain about small things like my phone not working, or the internet not working but these are all first world problems. At least there’s always a sufficient amount of food for everyone in my home. I also learned to be more generous. Often when I cook it’s just for myself. After cooking such large portions of food for someone else I’ve become more generous when cooking in my home.

What I learned about the community:

I learned that the gap between the poor and the rich is quite large. Obviously, there are going to be rich and poor people everywhere you go, but I didn’t realize our gap is so similar to the USA. I always assumed that most people her were either middle class of slightly below. After last week I realized there are people far below this. I also learned that the Bermudian community is compassionate and helpful.

What I learned about food :

I learned that cooking and food breaks barriers and creates new connections. Cooking is a great way to connect with others. It allows you to share your own culture with others that you’ve picked from personal experience. People can listen and learn from others and create new foods. Food is an essential part of people and culture and sharing this helps people understand each other.

The Bermudian community is compassionate and helpful.
