Self-Reflection
During this process there were many things that I learned about myself. First, I learned that as an individual I am much more privileged than I may have ever realized. In the past week, specifically when delivering the food to the homes, I was exposed to areas of Bermuda I have never seen before and living situations that were much worse than mine. It made me feel more grateful for everything I have; including my education, family, friends and home. In other ways, it allowed me to realize that the small issues that may occur in my life that I complain about, are not anywhere near the severity of issues that others experience every day. Overall, the experience made me feel extremely grateful to be fortunate enough to have a beautiful meal in front of me every night.
Food
Finally, there were many things I learned about food. On the first day of cooking for myself and my peers, I was tasked to help create the lemon brownies. After helping make these and trying one for myself I discovered a new love for this type of dessert. The “brownies” were made with lemon zest (graded lemon) and gave it an amazing fresh taste which I guarantee was enjoyed by each family on that day. Furthermore, I have never been very into cooking, but after the amazing meals we produced, I have started to enjoy it. My favorite meal out of the three I helped with, was the BBQ chicken, mac and cheese, and, of course, the lemon brownies that were served on Monday.
Community
I also learned a lot about my community. Primarily, I learned that there is a lot more poverty in Bermuda than I expected or had been exposed too. I also was happy to see the community coming together to support one another in terms of the way local churches found ways to give meals to people in need.
