WHAT I LEARNED ABOUT MYSELF:

I think that this experience taught me how self-confident I can be. Doing good for others, in a variety of ways, such as bringing in goods or helping in the process of packaging food to be served really provided me with a sense of accomplishment. Throughout the volunteer process I was able to connect more with others and change my mindset. Instead of thinking more negatively, which is a common theme for many throughout this difficult pandemic, I was able to think more positively and ensure to spread that positive energy to others.

WHAT I LEARNED ABOUT THE COMMUNITY:

Through volunteering, I learned a lot of things about our community. For starters, I learned that the simplest actions can really impact other’s in their day-to-day lives and how other people’s actions can impact my mine. For instance, doing something as simple as baking and providing pastries for the volunteer service or doing something as simple as drying the dishes like we did, can really go a long way in helping to positively change the lives of others.  All of this, though small, can really change the trajectory of someone’s day by making it a lot easier. However, the staff at Christ Church were nice enough to even let us have some of the food left over, and gestures like these helped to improve my day as well. Likewise, I discovered  how committed  our school community was in helping other’s in need throughout the island. Everyone, in our grade, who was able to volunteer, showed up and did what they had to do, not only to help in the process of providing food for persons who struggled to do so themselves , but also taking some of the weight off of the many other volunteers who worked there.

This great sense of community allowed me to see, that despite there being horrible people in the world, there are also decent human beings just trying to do good for humanity.

WHAT I LEARNED ABOUT FOOD:

Through volunteering, I learned that food is often taken for granted. Yes, everyone knows that food is one of the primary necessities of life, but how we consume food, how much food we consume, and the type of food we consume really depends on our place in society . Many may have food on demand, but others, like the people we were helping, do not. Many may have access to healthy food that nourishes our body, but in many places like Bermuda, where food like this is highly expensive, access to this is limited. That is why it is important for communities to  have food volunteering services, like the one at Christ Church that can provide healthy meals for people who are void of these privileges.
