What I learned about myself:

During this activity, I learned that I can easily learn new skills in cooking with some dedication. For example, on the first day, I peeled apples and carrots with a peeler which I knew how to do, but not very well. Although at the start, I was quite slow, I sped up gradually along the way. This shows that I was able to improve this skill in one day. Next, on the second day, I cooked taco meat in a pan which I have rarely done before. I learned from Gregg to understand how to do it and be more confident in this skills throughout the day. In addition, I transferred this skill when cooking chicken the following day.

What I learned about the community:

During this activity, I learned that there are differences in the living standard in the Bermudian community. On the first day, I was excited to help families and children of my age who don’t have the same opportunities as me. This helped me to reflect on how I have taken the opportunities that were offered to me. On the second day, I helped to deliver the food to the three families in Warwick which confirmed my idea that they are people who are less fortunate than us. Sometimes we might not see poverty because we are focused on our own challenges, but seeing the difficulties that other people are facing shows that our challenges are very few. Finally, on the last day, the Royal Gazette came to share this effort on the M5 class to help the community. In this experience, I learned that newspaper is a good way to influence people to act and help the community.

What I learned about food:

Finally, I have learned in this activity that food is extremely important and that it is important to waste as little possible. On the first day, there was extra mash-potatoes. We had filled completely three boxes, one for each family, but we found space to use all of the potatoes. In the second day, we made extra brownies for the other children in the neighborhood of the families who were also experiencing financial stress. This shows that even if there is extra for us, other people in the community will be glad to have more food. Finally, on the last day, we have delivered the rest of the fruits and other food that we didn’t use in the cooking throughout the week to make sure it doesn’t go to waste.
