The Cooking:

We cooked a multitude of meals throughout the week. Everyday we would cook up a monolithic amount of food to ensure we could feed three whole families. On my days I cooked BBQ chicken where I made the sauce and browned the chicken; on my second day I helped make tacos where I shredded cheese, chopped green onions and washed dishes. And then finally I decided to volunteer for a third day and help cook sweet thighs with stir fry, where I chopped vegetables and made the stir fry.

We were also able to build stronger teamwork skills in the kitchen and at the very end of each morning we would walk away feeling accomplished. Also due to the restrictions held in place before we haven’t seen each other for literally two months and a half, so it was a perfect opportunity to reunite with precautions set in place.

The Community:

The families we helped were less privileged who lived underneath the poverty line. When we visited their houses we were able to see right away they had very little. I can’t speak for my classmates but it certainly reminded me of how privileged I am and how thankful I feel for what is on my plate (figuratively).

To conclude we were clearly able to see that what we provided was important as these families didn’t know when their next meal could be and they struggled to find the resources to properly provide for their children and pets. All I can say now is that hopefully one week changed their lives for the better and set them good for a little while.

Self-Discovery:

I learned that I have the deep down desire to want to help people more and I know that in a way that sounds satirical, and I am not saying that before I didn’t want to help those in need, but now I feel perhaps I could start my own charity and think outside the box a little.

it certainly reminded me of how privileged I am and how thankful I feel for what is on my plate
