Rediscover The Pickled Onion

Rediscover The Pickled Onion

When you're lucky enough to get invited to participate in a restaurant review with Bermuda.com, it doesn't take long to pull up your socks, throw on your blazer and head for Hamilton. Our Write to Cook chefs were more than a little excited at the opportunity to do two of their favorite things—miss classes and EAT and the Pickled Onion certainly didn't disappoint.

It had been a few years since I'd dined at this popular local restaurant and I quickly rediscovered that it's so much more than pickles or onions. The menu is varied and adventurous offering everything from Kung Pao Chicken to Baked Brie and Filipino inspired pork. Head Chef Andre and staff greeted us with open arms and an open kitchen (literally) leaving us all wanting to come back with our families.

If it's been a while since you've visited The Pickled Onion, it's time to pack the kids in the car or book a date night and cosy up in one of their comfy booths. Better yet, enjoy a night on the balcony overlooking the lights of the harbor. At The Pickled Onion, it's hard to go wrong!

As we walked in, there was brightly colored beautiful scenery. I liked how there were quotes on the wall on each side and also that some of the lights were purple and not just regular yellow.

Touring the kitchen with Chef Andre

Touring the kitchen with Chef Andre

We were greeted by Andre, the chef, and we got a tour around the kitchen. The kitchen was very organized and they had different things in different sections. The cold foods were in this huge fridge, frozen foods were in this huge freezer and dry foods were in a storage area. After we had our tour, we sat down to eat.

Once there, we met Chef Andre and we got a tour of the kitchen and we were told how everything is used and what it makes. When the tour was finished we sat down at a table and the very kind and efficient staff brought us some of their best dishes.

Juice's Filipino Pork Tenderloin

Juice's Filipino Pork Tenderloin

We had an amazing dish with pork and brown rice Filipino style with a tasty sauce and a grilled pineapple. The pork was seasoned and marinated to perfection!

What dish I loved the most was the Rice and Pork.
— Aciram Burgess
We had a beautiful pizza with the perfect amount of sauce, sliced prosciutto, salami, fresh basil, soft mozzarella, and truffle with a thin crust. This pizza was a fairly good portion for a main course. With eight medium sized slices, it was quite filling.

Baked Brie

Baked Brie

The Panko Crusted Brie with blueberry chutney, fig port jam, caramelized onion and sage was gorgeous! Planning to go back when I don’t have to share...

This was the best deep fried Brie I have ever had and I really enjoyed every bite!

Kung Pao Chicken

Kung Pao Chicken

The Kung Pao chicken is a fabulous dish at the Pickled Onion. It’s made with sweet and sour chicken, cashews, peppers, ginger, noodles, garlic, sweet and soy sauce and plain old soy sauce. The noodles are not like normal noodles. They are tasty and crunchy. At first, the dish did not look like much to a child, but then we saw what was in it and we all loved the taste very much. Sanaa was right when she said, “Don’t judge a dish by its looks!” We were all new to the taste of the crunchy noodles but they were delicious to our taste buds. We would all definitely get another serving of the Kung Pao Chicken and next time we go there we will definitely order it for our families because it was delicious and we think our families will love it.

The Noodles weren’t your average soft and squiggly noodles, they were a bit crunchy and delicious!
— Aciram Burgess
My favorite dish was the noodles, which had a slight crunch. At the start I thought I was not going to enjoy them, but the noodles ended up being my favorite dish of the day!
— Sanaa Morris
The Coconut Flan is an awesome dessert and I would definitely recommend it to others.
— Arabella Crofts
The coconut flan was creamy and had the texture of a marshmallow. It was delicious!
— Sanaa Morris
The dessert was similar to cheese cake but not that much. It was like a soft creamy cake with whipped cream and Blueberries. After that, I was stuffed and I couldn’t eat any more!
— Aciram Burgess
Andre started cooking because his mother went to culinary school and loved to cook so she inspired him and he got into the habit and he has loved cooking ever since. His mother was a great cook and Andre has followed after her. The Coconut Flan is actually Andre’s mother’s dish. He’s an awesome cook at the Pickled Onion Restaurant.

Overall, Pickled Onion is a great place to go and eat and I would recommend it to all.

I think this restaurant review was a great experience and I can’t wait to do it again.

I definitely suggest that you and your family go and try the Pickled Onion’s amazing food.
